Five Tips for Millennials to Make Some Self-time Amidst their Busy Schedule
MAR 08, 2021
Millennials are initially really excited to begin their professional lives. After some time, they get so occupied with work that they cannot even find some time for themselves. This makes them feel frustrated, exhausted and the initial charm they had during the beginning of their professional life slowly begins to fade away. As a result, millennials soon stop enjoying their professional lives, and things become burdensome for them. If the same is true for you, too, this blog is for you. It will beacon you on how you can make some quality time for yourself amidst your busy schedule. Believe me, once you can make self-time, you’ll be able to enjoy your professional life again. Here are five simple tips to help you make some self-time amidst your busy schedule:
1. Keep your lunch break solely for relaxation:
As millennials, you are passionate about your work. You always try to give your best, endeavor to work more than expected, and often compromise your break time. You either gulp your food too quickly and get back to work, or you start multitasking, doing your work simultaneously while eating. But this is not at all good for you. It only adds up to stress and reduces your productivity. If you give yourself some time to relax and rejuvenate during the lunch break, believe me, you’ll be able to achieve even more on the work front. You should try to keep your lunch break solely for the purpose. After lunch, you can spend your break time doing small little things that you love. For example, you can listen to your favorite songs, play the games you enjoy, and go for a walk in the lap of nature.
2. Utilize the Pomodoro technique while working:
Do you know that there is a beneficial technique that can help you make some self-time now and then boost your productivity? I can see that you have a spark of excitement in your eyes now. The technique we are talking about is known as the Pomodoro technique. It works on the principle that our brain also gets exhausted after working for some time, just like the body. It then needs a break, and if it is not provided with one, its productivity gets significantly reduced. The Pomodoro technique advises us to work dedicatedly for 25 minutes and then take a short break for 5 to 7 minutes. You can utilize this short break as self-time and do some small little things which you enjoy. Writing something in your diary, reading a page or two from a book, and listening to your favorite songs are examples of activities you can enjoy during your short break.
3. Keep your stress levels managed:
Work stress is an integral part of professional life. The problem is that the higher your stress levels, the lower your productivity, and the more time you need to complete a task. This means that by reducing your stress levels, you can increase your productivity and complete your work in a lesser amount of time than you usually do. As a result, you’ll be able to get some free time and spend it with yourself. So, you should try to keep your stress levels managed. For this, you can try practicing deep breathing at regular intervals of time. Here is a simple count for you to practice deep breathing effectively:
○ Take a deep breath in a while, counting four in your mind
○ Hold your breath and count to four in your mind
○ Exhale while counting six in your mind
○ Hold and count till two before inhaling again on the count of four
○ Repeat this process five to six times
4. Wake up at least half an hour earlier than you usually do:
I know it is hard to get out of bed in the morning, but if you can try waking up at least half an hour earlier than you usually do, you can spend some self-time first thing in the morning. You can spend this half an hour with yourself, taking a brisk walk in the lap of nature, meditating, or doing something that you love doing. Believe me; if you do so, you will have a strong start to the day. You will feel happier than you usually do, and your productivity will also witness a steep rise.
5. Do not take your work home:
One of the simplest ways to take some time for yourself is to avoid taking your work home. For this, you should try your best to complete all your work in the office itself. Now, here are some time management tips that can help you complete all your work in the office only:
○ Utilize the Pomodoro technique while working:
As discussed above, the Pomodoro technique is a productivity booster. It will help you finish your work earlier than you usually do.
○ Set your timelines for work targets:
This is one of the most effective techniques for time management. You should try to set your timelines for the work targets you have to complete daily. For example, if you have to submit some work by 2 p.m., you can challenge yourself to complete it by 1:30 p.m.
○ Avoid distractions:
We carry one of the biggest distractions with ourselves all the time. Here we are talking about our smartphones. If you have the habit of using social media frequently, then you should try to limit it. This will help you complete all your work in the office only.
Lack of self-time can make millennials feel frustrated and unhappy. This can also have a significant negative impact on your work performance. Further, if you are struggling to make some time for yourself, the tips mentioned earlier will significantly help you. Wish you All the very best and happy professional life ahead.
